Air Fryer Potatoes and Onions

This air fryer potatoes and onions recipe is a family favorite! Simple and easy to make, these air-fried onions and potatoes can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or as a side dish with different meals.

The air fryer is perfect for cooking onions and potatoes together. My Ninja 6-in-1 Air fryer fits comfortably 2 large cut-up potatoes and 2 medium-sized onions. Seasoned with a little oil, salt, garlic powder, and herbs, I love how potatoes come out with a crisp exterior, and onions are perfectly browned and caramelized.

Why air fryer potatoes and onions?

You can cook or fry them on the stovetop, but there are some reasons why I love to make them in the air fryer.

Ready within minutes: In the air fryer, it takes less oil and is cooked within 12-15 minutes. Pan-frying potatoes and onions on the stovetop may take at least 30 minutes, you need to add lots of oil for frying, also not remain healthy.

Mess-free: When you cook in the air fryer, you don’t need to clean the excess oil splatters, that are spread all over the stovetop. You just need to clean the air fryer basket once the cycle is complete and air fryer cools off.

Delicious: Air fryer potatoes and onions are just as delicious as pan-fried.

How to make Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes and Onions

For this recipe, you only need a few simple ingredients:

  • 2 russet potatoes, cut into cubes
  • 2 medium sweet onions (or yellow onions), chopped
  • Olive oil (or vegetable oil of choice)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Garlic powder
  • Seasoning of choice
  • Fresh Rosemary, to taste

Directions

  • Cut onions and potatoes. Slice them how you prefer. I cut potatoes into approximately 1-inch thick cubes. And slice onions to ¼ inch thick.
  • In a medium bowl add potatoes, onions, oil and seasoning and mix all ingredients.
  • Coat the potatoes and onions with the seasoning by tossing them.
  • Now preheat the air fryer at 375F/190C.
  • Transfer potatoes and onion to the air fryer basket/tray, and lay them in a single layer.
  • Air fry them for 10 to 15 minutes ( toss them every five minutes so that they will cook evenly from each side)
  • Fry them until their desired color and crispiness.

Tips and variations

Seasoning: You can use your favorite seasonings such as oregano, a pinch of red chili, and salt.

Italian seasoning goes well with this side dish. You can also use a little bit of brown sugar for more taste and texture.

Overcrowding your fryer basket: may cause your potatoes and onions to not cook evenly. Veggies will get tender but may not turn crispy and caramelized.

Cook meal together: You can also cook your favorite meal in the same basket, at the same time. Just place your meal such as chicken, salmon, or steak bites in the basket and spread onions and potatoes around them. You will get your complete meal at the same time. Do not forget to flip halfway.

How to store

You can store them in an air-tight container or zip lock bag for up to 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator. Reheat them for 3 minutes at 380F. Keep in mind the onions may not remain crispy as they are freshly cooked but tasty.

You can use leftover air fryer potatoes and onions in different dishes such as:

  • Make potatoes and onion rice.
  • Use air-fried potatoes and onions in soups
  • Make potatoes and onion curry by adding some spices and tomatoes. Make gravy and enjoy with bread.
  • Make stuffed bread filling by mashing them and by doing some variations in seasoning.
