Naan bread

Here’s a simple and authentic recipe for Naan Bread — soft, fluffy Indian flatbread perfect for dipping or serving alongside curries.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt (room temperature)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter, plus extra for cooking
  • Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds for topping

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast:
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. Make the dough:
In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, yogurt, and oil. Stir until a sticky dough forms.

  3. Knead the dough:
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add flour as needed to prevent sticking, but keep the dough soft.

  4. Let dough rise:
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

  5. Divide and shape:
Punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then roll out into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4 inch thick.

  6. Cook the naan:
Heat a cast-iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat. Brush one side of the naan with water and place it wet side down on the hot skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbles form and the bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes.

  7. Optional toppings:
Brush cooked naan with melted butter or garlic butter. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro, minced garlic, or nigella seeds if desired.

  8. Serve warm:
Serve naan warm with your favorite curries, dips, or as a wrap.

Enjoy your homemade soft and fluffy naan bread!
